Use of Office Furniture in the Education Sector
Office Furniture Use in the Education Sector
A school should provide the comfort, focus, and support needed by students and teachers not only with its building or classrooms but also with the furniture used.
In the past, classrooms were places where two or three students shared the same desk, and teachers taught from higher platforms or in front of blackboards. Nowadays, those desks have been replaced with individual work desks and chairs. Today's students learn collectively, work in groups, and interact with teachers during lessons.
Classrooms no longer have just a single function. Today's modern learning system is diversified with differentiated learning in a class, in groups, or individually. A classroom should be quickly adaptable to different arrangements, from arranging chairs in a wide circle to small group work, from teacher-focused lessons to quiet, concentrated study. For this purpose, the learning environment can be flexibly arranged with functional and easy-to-manage desks and chairs. Thus, the classroom loses its teacher-focused, single-point perspective and gains the characteristic of a 'workshop' where students interact with each other and their teachers.
Education is no longer limited to the classroom. Physical spaces in schools are expected to support collaborative learning, creation, and discussion for students to fully benefit from active learning. Students need spaces for group work outside of class. Therefore, learning can happen anywhere in the school. School corridors are no longer just spaces for students to run around during breaks. Lounges or corridors, transformed into spaces where students spend time together and continue learning, feature comfortable seating areas, sofas, or pouffes suitable for group work.
It is very important that all furniture throughout the school is ergonomic, and chairs and desks are adjustable to the body size of students who spend almost their entire day at school. As a fundamental ergonomic requirement in classroom furniture, height-adjustable desks and chairs prevent posture disorders in students. Desks that are too low for the student's height can cause them to slouch and strain their spine. Conversely, a desk that is too high can lead to shoulder tension.
