The color of the year: Viva Magenta
As you must have noticed, Pantone announced Viva Magenta as the color of 2023. Representing the enthusiasm of vitality and vigor, rooted in nature, derived from the red family, a new indicator of strength: Viva Magenta. A color representing the unprecedented times we have been going through since the early days of the pandemic, defined as a new vision, and reflecting the state of well-being.
Magenta initially took its name from an aniline dye made and patented by the French chemist François-Emmanuel Verguin in 1859 as 'fuchsine'. This color was renamed in celebration of the Franco-Italian victory in the Battle of Magenta, fought between the French and Austrians near the Italian town of Lombardy, Magenta, on June 4, 1859. It then became known as 'Magenta'.
Derived from the flower of the fuchsia plant, Magenta has been one of the four main colors used in color printing since the late nineteenth century. Magenta, the complementary color of green, produces white when combined in the RGB model, and when used together, they enhance each other's brightness, providing the highest possible contrast.
The color of mental and physical well-being
As we mentioned in our previous blog posts about colors, color is a visual language, a means of communication, and also a psychological tool that triggers emotions. You can access our previous blog postshere.
Magenta is also described as the color of those in favor of change and free spirits. Creating harmony and emotional balance, supporting personal and spiritual development, Magenta helps maintain one's balance and cope with daily dramatic influences. However, for some, Magenta can be overly soothing, supporting that person to complete challenging tasks. As too much of anything can be harmful, excessive use of Magenta sometimes leads to arrogance and intolerance.
Viva Magenta, the courageous, fearless color from the Magenta family, encourages optimism and joy. It offers a balance between warm and cold, emitting dynamism, and can guide design towards creating a more positive future.
A source of energy in decoration and design
With its dynamic vibrancy, Viva Magenta brings energy, excitement, and a touch of drama to spaces. It also encourages self-expression and adds vitality. It can be used in various surfaces, textures, and materials, from office furniture to space design and decoration. Evoking the spirit of nature, without dominating but instead creating a subtle presence, Viva Magenta can emerge as a striking wall, eye-catching office furniture, artwork, or bold accents like a coffee table or pouf in an office dominated by calm and natural colors.
Powerful and empowering, encouraging to try and express oneself without restraint, Viva Magenta is a bold and all-encompassing color. In this age of technology, drawing its strength from nature and ‘reality’, this color, whose roots have existed since the beginning, also connects us to our origins. In an era where well-being has become essential, Viva Magenta seems set to invigorate our spirit and enhance our inner strength.
